06 - Genjutsu

Genjutsu is the technique of illusionists, of those who avoid direct conflict. Genjutsu inflicts damage, mental and/or physical, by messing with the five senses of a shinobi. To break free from a Genjutsu, one must inflict pain upon one's self or use the Kai technique. Genjutsu only last several turns on their own, however. Below is a list of how many posts a Genjutsu will last on a character of a certain rank.

(Char. Rank) (Jutsu Rank: D,C,B,A,S)
E-Rank: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
D-Rank: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
C-Rank: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
B-Rank: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
A-Rank: 1, 1, 2, 3, 4
S-Rank: 1, 1, 1, 2, 3

There are only a few ways of escaping Genjutsu. One method is self inflicted pain, and the other is a technique known as Kai, or Release. There are a few more, such as a technique in the Uchiha clan, but they are special in their own regards. The basic two are explained below.

Causing pain to oneself disrupts the nerves in your body, essentially cancelling the Genjutsu's hold. The amount of pain / damage inflicted affects how long it takes to escape the jutsu. However, it is not reliable. You can only inflict so much pain on yourself before you take too much blood loss.

Bite Thumb: One post to inflict and escape, but cannot attack after - Can use upto 4 times
Stab self with Kunai/Weapon: One post to inflict and escape, and can attack afterwards - Can use only twice per thread

This technique is particularly useful for escaping Genjutsus. However, it can only protect oneself from Genjutsu one letter rank above what you have (Ex. You are C rank, Kai can disrupt upto B-rank Genjutsu for you). It can be used as many times as you wish, but is only usable once every three posts by the user.
